Statement from Friends of Canadian Media ahead of the opening of the 45th Parliament

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, 26 MAY 2025 – Marla Boltman, Executive Director for Friends of Canadian Media, made the following statement:

Friends of Canadian Media was pleased to see Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government elected on a mandate to defend our culture, our identity, and our democracy, particularly at a time when all three face unprecedented threats from south of the border.

This timely mandate includes supporting CBC/Radio-Canada over the long term and investing in Canadian storytelling and journalism, while combating the surge of online disinformation and misinformation. We expect these commitments to feature prominently in the upcoming Speech from the Throne – Prime Minister Carney’s first public opportunity to present his policy priorities to Canadians.

We look forward to working collaboratively with the government on the critical task of defending our cultural sovereignty – one that starts with strengthening homegrown Canadian media all across the country.”
