This report examines data from Elections Canada, showing that:
- fewer, larger media conglomerates are lending progressively greater financial support to federal political parties and election candidates
- such contributions peak during election years, particularly for parties other than the governing party
- broadcasters are among the top contributors to the Liberal Party of Canada, especially when their donations are considered as a ratio of market capitalization.
- contributions to individual cabinet members show similar broadcaster support
Friends therefore recommends the Canada Elections Act be amended to prohibit those controlling broadcasting licences from making financial contributions to any federal political party or individual candidate for office.
