CBC's secret plan to move The NationalAug 4, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Toronto - CBC has a closely guarded secret plan to move its flagship news program The National from 10 pm to 11 pm weeknights. This would reduce the reach and influence of Canada's most important news program and compromise the CBC's mandate, according to the watchdog group Friends of Canadian Broadcasting. FRIENDS believes CBC may fill the 10 pm weeknight spot which would be vacated by The National with entertainment programming, possibly of non-Canadian origin. "Funding cuts may have left the CBC struggling to make ends meet, but only someone who does not understand or care about the CBC's public broadcasting mandate would come up with this plan," said FRIENDS' spokesperson Ian Morrison. FRIENDS has written to CBC President Hubert Lacroix as well as other members of the CBC Board of Directors urging them to reject this plan. The text of that letter follows:
