Vacancies on the CBC Board and at the CRTC

Mar 26, 1998

For Immediate Release

A leadership vacuum is forming fast at two of Canada's most important cultural institutions.  This week, the terms of two members of the CBC Board expired.  Within the next few months, one third of the seats at the CBC Board table will be empty.  And by the end of this year, the terms of two thirds of CBC Directors will come to an end.

Of the13 full-time Commissioners at the CRTC, there are currently three seats empty.  By the middle of April, the CRTC will be short six full-time Commissioners.  All six part-time Commission seats are currently vacant.

Prime Minister Chrétien must fill the existing and upcoming vacancies at both the CBC and CRTC.  He has an opportunity to break from past practice of turning to white, mostly male and largely upper middle-class appointees of these two flagship institutions, and reach out to people representative of all the regions and cultures of Canada.  The Prime Minister has made 17 appointments to the CBC and CRTC since 1993.   Not a single appointment has been made from the Prairie region, for example.
