Robert Lantos a longtime champion of Canadian movie, TV industries
by Chris Cobb
Award-winning movie producer Robert Lantos was appointed to CBC's influential board of directors by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien yesterday.
Hungarian-born Mr. Lantos, 51, has won four Genie awards for his movies Black Robe, Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter and Sunshine. He has also been nominated for Academy Awards and has won prizes at the Cannes and Berlin film festivals. His TV programs such as Due South, ENG and Night Heat have brought him 10 Gemini awards.
Mr. Lantos, a known supporter of the Liberal party, was co-founder of Alliance Communications Corp. and is widely acknowledged as a champion of the Canadian movie and TV industries.
His three-year appointment was greeted enthusiastically by the pro-CBC lobby group Friends of Canadian Broadcasting who said Mr. Lantos's importance in the Canadian entertainment industry warranted his image being on a postage stamp.
"This represents a real upgrade in appointments to the CBC board," said spokesman Ian Morrison. "Robert Lantos is a person of exceptional quality and experience who believes in public broadcasting."
CBC union leader Lise Lareau, president of the Canadian Media Guild, welcomed the Lantos appointment but questioned the ongoing "secret" process of the government appointing board members without any public or employee input.
The federal government is also due to appoint a new chairperson to head the CBC board of directors, after Guylaine Saucier resigned at Christmas.
