Copyright policy and law will be the subject for a round-table discussion today in Winnipeg.

The cross-country Copyright Consultation by the Government of Canada is an eight-city process taking place this summer. The town hall meetings, round tables, online submissions and discussions give the public a chance to help the federal government shape an expected update to copyright legislation.

Today's Winnipeg consultation is not open to the public and Canadian Heritage won't release a list of who was invited to participate for a few days.

Current copyright legislation, enacted in 2001, hasn't been modified for nearly 10 years and during that time, new technologies, distribution processes and consumer products have emerged.

At the end of the public consultations, the government plans to take stock of all comment and submissions and says it hopes to introduce legislation this fall aimed at keeping Canada well-positioned in the digital age.
