A few weeks ago I wrote to you to tell you about allegations of collusion between Liberal Members of Parliament and the taxpayer-funded CBC.
You will recall that former Liberal cabinet minister Jean Lapierre, now a reporter with the TVA network, told a national television audience that the CBC actually wrote questions that were later asked by a Liberal MP at committee.
The Liberals, of course, denied the allegations and suggested that the claims of their former colleague were a "total fabrication".
Despite the fact that the national media took very little interest in this story initially, you made it an issue.
You made it an issue by writing the CBC;
You made it an issue by posting your comments across the blogosphere;
You made it an issue by writing letters to the editor; and
You made it an issue by calling talk radio and demanding fairness and accountability.
Thanks to the grassroots efforts of people like you we now know that the CBC has officially admitted that inappropriate practices were followed. In addition, the CBC has re-assigned the reporter in question.
Of course, the Liberal Party - the party that initially dismissed reports about the sponsorship scandal - remains on the record having called Mr. Lapierre's allegations a "total fabrication."
This incident again demonstrates why we - as Conservatives - always need to fight harder and campaign better.
We rely on people like you. People who think for themselves. People who speak up for what they believe in. People who are willing to take a stand even when it means challenging entrenched vested interests.
Together, we won this small fight. But there will be many more fights in the coming days and weeks as Stéphane Dion gets ready to pull the plug on this Parliament and force Canadians into an early election.
The coming election will be an historic contest.
It will determine whether or not we build on our achievements or go back to the old Liberal way of doing business. Back to higher taxes. Back to soft-on-crime. Back to gutting the military. Back to the failed gun registry. Back to political correctness. Back to special interests calling the shots.
In our corner, there will be millions of ordinary people who work hard, pay their taxes and play by the rules - the backbone of the Conservative Party.
In Stéphane Dion's corner there will be every vested interest that yearns for a return to the old Liberal way of doing business.
I know you don't want to go back. The only way we can counter the Liberals is to raise as much money as we can in the pre-election period. I'll need cash to produce and run ads in some of the most expensive television markets in the country. I'll need cash to fuel our buses and our plane at a time when the price of fuel is going through the roof. And I'll need cash to keep our War Room staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
Will you please consider making a special financial contribution - $200 or $100 - to help our team to prepare for the coming fight against the Liberals?
Thank you.
