Toronto -- CBC Television drew respectable numbers for its Monday night line-up of new shows, according to preliminary Nielsen surveys. The debut of Rick Mercer's half-hour
Monday Report at 8 p.m. drew an impressive 797,000 viewers.
It was followed by the first instalment of Ken Finkleman's 13-part series The Newsroom, which had an estimated audience of 506,000, perhaps the evening's most disappointing figure. And Nielsen overnights pegged the debut of Bernard Zukerman's 13-part legal series This Is Wonderland, starring Cara Pifko, at 627,000.
CBC executive vice-president Slawko Klymkiw called the numbers "a good start. Six months ago, we set a target of where we wanted to begin, and in each case the Neilsen numbers are higher than our targets."
Klymkiw said he'd have "loved to wake to news that a million people had watched Wonderland, but the selling of Canadian TV shows is difficult and challenging. These are good numbers to start with and build on." Staff
