Canada's broadcast regulator wants to report how much private broadcasters are spending on Canadian TV programs.

The CRTC is considering including that information in public files for television license renewals.

The files would also include the type of programs which receive funding. That information is already provided by broadcasters to show they satisfy Canadian content rules. But it's not made public.

A spokesperson for the watchdog group FRIENDS of Canadian Broadcasting says making the information public is long overdue.
