London -- The BBC may sell off one of the most famous broadcasting studios in the world as part of a cost-cutting strategy, a spokesman has confirmed.

Bosses have discussed closing Television Centre in west London, nicknamed "the doughnut" by staff, because they face receiving a lower grant than they asked for from Prime Minister Tony Blair's government.

Ministers will announce the size of the licence-fee settlement within days, but leaks suggest that the deal will fall short of expectations.

"We are looking at the future role that Television Centre might play over the coming decades," a BBC spokesman said. The complex opened in 1960.

The corporation is already downsizing its London operations by moving up to 1,800 staff to Manchester, northwest England, in a £400-million ($917-million) move.
