Last Friday, Robert Benzie, who toils in The Star's Queen's Park bureau, reported that Dalton McGuinty's Liberal government "is poised to strip Isabel Bassett of some of her powers as chair and chief executive officer of TVOntario." If the move is being made for governance reasons, I say fine. But, if it's being made for political reasons, then hands off. Bassett, who lives common-law with Conservative Leader Ernie Eves, has run the province's educational network since 1999 when former premier Mike Harris appointed her. Word is, she will become part-time chair and a new CEO with "20 or more years experience in running a TV network" will take over as president. Well who could that be? How about Citytv televisionary Moses Znaimer, who last year left the empire he created? Not so surprising, considering that the bilingual Znaimer is a CBC vet with a personal and financial interest in Alberta's educational TV ACCESS, Canadian Learning Television, BookTelevision and CourtTV Canada as well as The Learning Annex, the night school with brochures in boxes all over town.
Znaimer sure would shake up TVO. The Toronto TV scene hasn't felt the same since he left.
