TORONTO -- Original Canadian TV shows are increasingly showing up on domestic pay TV and specialty channels, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
The government statistics agency said Canadian-content programming accounted for 44% of programming on pay TV and specialty channels in fall 2002, the last period surveyed, compared with 40% in 1998.
By contrast, Canadian content programming on conventional TV networks fell slightly from 57% in fall 1998 to 56% four years later.
As in the U.S. market, the migration of Canadian programming to niche channels is mirrored in domestic audience figures, the Statscan survey revealed.
In 2002, Canadians spent 25% of their viewing time watching pay TV and specialty channels, against 16% in 1998. Conventional TV stations, by contrast, saw their viewership fall to 51% in 2002 from 56% in 1998.
Statscan noted that in both the English- and French-language TV markets here, specialty channels were drawing viewership and Canadian-content programming from domestic conventional TV stations.
Genre-wise, Statscan said Canadian-content shows were increasing in all types of programming, except for Canadian music and dance programs, where viewership fell from 4.5% in 1998 to 2.5% in 2002.
The survey indicated Canadian conventional TV stations experienced the steepest drop in indigenous content for sports programming, which accounted for 4.8% of programming in the fall of 2002, against 7.3% four years earlier, and Canadian variety and games programming, which were down from 8.3% to 5.6%.
News and current affairs programming continues to provide the bulk of Canadian-content shows on domestic TV schedules, Statscan reported.
The erosion of viewership for Canadian conventional TV stations began during the 1980s with the introduction of the first domestic specialty channels, which proliferated during the 1990s.
The arrival of Canadian direct-to-home satellite services in 1997 and the launch last year of first-ever digital channels has added to audience fragmentation here.
