OTTAWA – The federal government is backing down on measures that would have permitted it to fire the CBC's president, chairman and board members on a whim.

Treasury Board President Marcel Masse told the House of Commons yesterday that because of lobbying within his caucus the government is amending Bill C-44. The bill stated that the board of directors at the CBC was to be named "at pleasure" by the government, a change from the present provision that appointees remain in office during "good behaviour."

"The government has decided to amend Bill C-44 to continue to name the order-in-council appointments to the CBC on a good-behaviour basis," Mr. Masse said.

Critics had said that the measure threatened the CBC's autonomy and the arm's-length relationship between the government and various arts agencies. A spokesman for a citizens group said he is delighted with the decision. "We don't want the government influencing the behaviour of journalists," Ian Morrison of the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting said.
