The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation delivers the best Canadian television programming, according to a new survey by the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting.

In It's Good and We Like It, released Wednesday, the lobby organization says that 54 per cent of Canadians say that CBC Television produces the best Canadian shows.  That compares with 15 per cent who think the CTV network broadcasts the best Canadian material and six per cent who gave top marks to Global.

At the same time, the survey indicates that Canadian-produced dramas are holding their own in audience share against the steady onslaught of U.S. network and cable programming.

The CBC's DaVinci's Inquest, for example, ranked ahead of such popular American fare as The West Wing and NYPD Blue, while CTV's Cold Squad was more popular among Canadians, according to the survey, than such shows as Ally McBeal and Felicity.

"Considering the substantial multiples of production funding the U.S. series enjoy," the Friends survey concludes, "this result constitutes a distinct achievement for the Canadian production system."

The most popular Canadian shows, says the survey – based on in-home interviews conducted in 1999 – were these four CBC programs: The Nature of Things, Hockey Night in Canada, The National, and Royal Canadian Air Farce.
