Finally...

Nov 6, 2009

Finally, in the eighth month of its fiscal year, the Harper government has replaced $60 million of the $63 million that it cut from CBC's appropriation in May 14, 2009.  CBC’s gain may be short lived.  The Harper government has asked CBC to make a 5% or $56 million cut to its budget as part of the government’s “program review”.

A year after major changes to CBC Radio 2 programming, I still miss it every day, and wonder where they are going with the continuing changes. There is clearly a deliberate erosion of classical and jazz music programming, and I fear they are making CBC another pop music site. I can imagine my preferences are not the majority, but what is the goal? Turning it into a marketable advertising band? Every morning I still long to turn on my radio to start the day with some classical music.... and now too Sunday evenings are another fast talk and rock show! ( I know, George is a lovely guy, but it's all fast-paced and quick clips) I am thankful that we have Laurie Brown's new music show on late nights, and Julie Nezralla weekdays, and Bill Richardson on Sundays, but now my listening is confined to those hours alone. And fortunately, there is good jazz and classical on the French language Radio Canada. Yes, I can "listen 24/7 " on the website, except that's just continuous muzac, no host, no information, and I don't have a computer in my car, and I don't have a sophisticated (expensive) audio system at home. CBC Radio was created to to be accessible to all and to unify listeners across the expanse of Canada. I protest being pushed out of my listenership.

So what is the point?! Or is it just another Harper shell game....?

There has been a gap between Stephen Harper's words and deeds regarding the CBC, as well as a continuing pattern of contradictory statements. FRIENDS tracks these statements, both from the Prime Minister and from other Conservatives here: http://www.friends.ca/fact-sheet/252
