Liberals Silent on Culture and Broadcasting

Jun 3, 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa – FRIENDS of Canadian Broadcasting has scoured the Liberal platform released this morning by Prime Minister Paul Martin, looking for the cultural challenges Canada faces.  Apparently there are none.

"This is the first Liberal "Red Book" to be silent on cultural issues for as long was we began covering broadcasting and culture in 1985," said FRIENDS' spokesperson Ian Morrison.

There is no mention of cultural sovereignty, CBC, arts, foreign ownership of the media, or any other cultural issue on the minds of Canadian voters.

"The Liberal platform raises more questions than it answers," said FRIENDS spokesperson Ian Morrison.

"Does the Prime Minister agree with Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper that funding to CBC television and Radio Two should be eliminated?  The Prime Minister has told us a review of limits to foreign ownership of Canadian media and communications companies is underway.  Will he allow our media and communications companies to be controlled by foreign interests? What about the growing concentration of ownership in the media? What’s the Liberal Party position?" Morrison asked. "Canadians want to know."

A recent survey of 1,100 Canadian voters conducted by Ipsos-Reid for FRIENDS between May 4 and May 9, 2004 found that:

  • 9 in ten Canadians agree that "as Canada’s economic ties with the United States increase, it's becoming more important to strengthen Canadian culture and identity".
  • Nine out of 10 want funding to CBC increased (38%) or maintained (51%).
85% favour maintaining domestic ownership and control of Canadian communications and broadcasting companies.
  • A majority of Canadians think there is too much media concentration (60%), that media concentration is undermining Canadian democracy (62%), and that the federal government should limit further concentration (63%).
