Satellite TV providers must apply to carry radio by Grand Robertson

Satellite television providers won't be able to carry satellite radio without applying for changes to their licences, the federal broadcast regulator has ruled. Bell ExpressVu LP sought to add satellite radio to its feed and was backed by Sirius Canada and Canadian Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., which operates the XM Canada franchise. However, CBC protested, arguing satellite radio constitutes a new broadcast operation. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission said it will require TV companies to argue for licence amendments. Cable providers have applied for such licence amendments. A ruling is expected in the next few weeks. Sirius and XM want to expand their audience by putting their signal on new platforms such as cellphones and TV. CBC is a part-owner of Sirius, but also operates the Galaxie pay music channels on digital cable and satellite TV, which would compete with the proposed service.
