While receiving more than $200-million in public assistance, Canadian TV broadcasters are buying more U.S. programming, as opposed to Canadian shows as intended, Friends of Canadian Broadcasters is arguing. The watchdog joined the cry this week against current broadcast regulations as Canadian networks begin the process this week of buying rights to air U.S. programs.

"Private broadcasters enjoy a substantial amount of public funding every year that is intended to encourage more Canadian content. It would seem that the unintended consequence is simply to deepen the pockets of private broadcasters for their annual trek to Hollywood," said Ian Morrison, a spokesman for the group.

Citing data from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, the group said that private broadcasters spent $479-million on foreign drama in 2006, up 16 per cent from 2005, while spending on Canadian drama fell 15 per cent to $70.9-million between 2005 and 2006.
